Default Anti Drain Back Valv

Have a 1970 El Camino SS396. Does this engine require an oil filter with an anti drain-back valve?

Thanks for reading,

Dan

Was wondering since the filter is vertical with the threaded opening facing up. I would think the oil would drain back into it anyway and fill it after the engine is turned off.

Update: Found this rather long explanation on the internet. It appears a anti drain-back valve is probably a good thing to have.

[Quote]: Even when the filter is vertical, all of the oil in the engine wants to have the same "energy" level. Any oil that is above the filter wants to get back to the sump, where it has lower "energy". It can get there two ways - either through the engine or through the filter. Without an anti drain-back valve, the oil simply flows backwards through the filter back to the sump, until the energy level balances out. With the anti drain-back valve, it cannot do that - it gets stopped on top of the filter and thus is at the ready for the next startup.

The oil would like to flow back down the oil galleries backwards through the filter and into the sump, but the ADBV stops it. The oil galleries and passage all the way to the filter core should always be full and have nowhere to empty out of anyway (regardless of filter position) because it's like a well that is being filled up from the bottom. The upper cylinder head gets zilch until the system can filter enough oil to fill up/pressurize the galleries. [end of quote]
