Default Replace or Rebuild Carburetor

Hello All, I think I posted this in the wrong forum, so I am posting it again here.

I am a new member on this forum, but will probably be a regular as I am doing a complete renovation on a 85 Chevy C10.

My question right now is, about the carburetor, should I rebuild, or replace?

Been looking at some of those Holly or Edelbrock units and am wondering what the general consensus is, Replace or Rebuild?

I know I have problems with the carburetor, I have to crank for quite a while before she will start, not running real smooth, and dying unexpectedly. Maybe just a cracked seal?

I am replacing the entire fuel system, new gas tanks, fuel lines, vapor lines, pump, etc.

The current carburetor is the original Rochester 4bbl. I would prefer not to spend 500 bucks on a new one, but I really want this old girl to run good when I finish this project.

Any help, suggestions or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Welcome from Florida. You can get a carb rebuild kit for around $20 on Rockauto. It's worth a try to rebuild it before having to replace it at a much larger cost. You will probably need a thorough rebuild with replacing worn bushings and such that might not be in a rebuild kit.

When you rebuild it, remember to seal the 4 lead welsh plugs in the bottom of the float bowl. They leak and caused extended crank on cold start.

Okay I am going to show my ignorance here, how do I identify the lead welsh plugs, and will the seals for them be included with a rebuild kit? This sounds important because it takes forever to crank on a cold start, and the guy at the auto part store said it was probably leaking in the bowl.

When you remove the throttle plate, (the bottom of the carb) , on the bottom of the float bowl you will see 4 plugs ( 2 sizes and 2 of each) can't miss them. We would use epoxy to seal them (not included in over haul kit). Also I would recommend replacing the float if not included in over haul kit.

Thank you for the info, by epoxy, do you mean a regular epoxy like J-B weld? or is there something special?

Std Motor products used to market a pretty good ovhl kit. (Hygrade).
It always came with instructions and specs depending on the number on the main body.

If you take your time and follow the instructions EXACTLY, the engine always started and ran OK, but it did require some fine tuning setting choke pull off, high idle cam speed setting and of course mixture. If the engine was good and the directions were followed, never received any complaints after returning to customer.. There is something to be said for a job well done and the engine ran like it should.
Learn as much as you can before starting the job and the reward is pride in doing a good job well.

I still have the Delco/Rochester carb manual if you provide the number on the main body , I should be able to supply the specs. (float drop, float level, choke setting , ball park setting for choke pull off etc.

Thank you so much, It is a Rochester Quadrajet 17085226. The engine on my truck is the 305 V8, if that makes any difference.
I have ordered a rebuild kit from my local auto part store, I am hoping it comes with instructions, if it does not, could you point me to where I could find some?
Thanks again
