Default Engine fan is running

I have a 2012 Cruze and my engine light just came on the other day as well as my engine fan. My temp gauge is the normal temp it should be after it warms up. I'm not sure what the problem is. Is there a recall on this? If not, there should be. I have been researching this and it seems many people are having this problem with the 2012 Cruze.

Default Solution!

To solve this problem, take it to the dealer. You're thermostat needs replaced which is covered by the power terrain warranty and they will put more coolant fluid in.

Default 2012 Chevy Cruze LS

Sorry In advance for the long post!

So my husband had driven to Michigan (from WI) and on his way back, the check engine light came on in our car and the fan became extremely loud. For good measure he had taken it into a Goodyear and was told the car was okay to be driven and that a sensor needed to be replaced.
I put it off for 2 months and finally decided to take it in again.
I had gone to a quicklube for an Oil Change and they had told me that there was a magnetic piece that was attached to the Thermostat that was causing the problem. (I had asked if they had any idea what was causing it)
They recommend that I go to an actual auto shop to further look into the issue. So Again I go to a local Auto shop after trying the dealership (they were gonna charge me $100 just to tell me the code) and they than tell me that the actual problem is that the Thermostat Housing needs to be replaced and that my car isn't overheating, it's actually running cool because of the fan(Another $67 for that diagnoses) They said that It would cost around $360 to have that done. How do I know if that is actually going to fix the problem or if it is one of the first few diagnoses?
Any help is appreciated
Sincerely
Frustrated cruze owner

I'm having the same problem and just bought MY cruze last week. The serpentine belt needs replaced and then the engine light came on the next day. Car always sounds like its running even when the car is turned off. Is there any recall on this ?

I have been having similar problems with my 2011 Cruze. It has a little over 60k miles. I work from home now, so I only drive it maybe a day a week for a couple miles (2 years ago I had around 55k).

A couple months ago I noticed the engine light would be on some days and not on other days. Since it kept going away and there were no other symptoms, I just figured it was some sensor that was messed up and didn't do anything about it.

Now the light is always on and the fan runs very loud.

Also, when stopped at a light I notice my RPM drop from around 700 to about 500 for a split second, the car shudders like it might die, then the RPM goes back up and it's fine.

I know I need to take it in to the dealer, but honestly, I don't have a ton of extra money right now and since I drive it so rarely, would it be dangerous to keep driving it without getting it fixed? It's more of an annoyance. It's not running hot and I haven't noticed any other issues.

If I didn't have to pay around $100 to get the code read I would get that checked and I could fix minor problems like replacing the thermostat myself. It's such a hassle.

Hello BrandonTan82,

We're sorry to hear you're having trouble with your Cruze. As we are not trained technicians, we wouldn't be able to speculate on why you've encountered this concern. However, if you're thinking you'd like to visit a certified Chevrolet dealership, we'd be happy to set up a service visit. We're available via private message and only need your VIN, mileage, contact information, and preferred dealership to move forward.

Kind regards,

Jasmine
