Default OnStar service 2G ending

I got notice yesterday that GM is ending the navigation and the Chevy app for remote start, unlock and lock, and functions due to the sunset of 2G service. I haven't called for details yet. But, does anyone in this forum know if GM can upgrade our BCM, or system that allows for such service, by doing a download or update? It would seem that could be possible with all the technology put into these cars. Or, is there a system upgrade that can be purchased to install as a replacement ?
