Default Equinox Alternator

2006 3.4 V-6

Alternator is noisy and failing. I heard you have to support the engine and remove the passenger motor mount and tilt the engine slightly forward to be able to have enough room to change the alternator. Also heard there are 3 different versions of alternators on the 2006.

What is a reasonable price from a qualified shop to change and replace the alternator with a new one along with a new serpentine belt - parts and labor? Thank you.

Removing the engine mount is not required to change the alternator, but it is required to change the serpentine belt.

There are only two different designs used for the alternator on the 2006 Equinox. The first design is a Valeo (GM p/n 15279852) and uses two mounting bolts. The second design is a Denso (GM p/n 15812949) and uses three mounting bolts.

It's hard to provide an estimate because part & labor costs can vary a lot depending on the shop, your location, and what parts you need.

Most (but not all) shops charge you double their cost of the part plus whatever estimated labor time is listed in their service guide for the job times their hourly labor rate. For my area, I'd estimate $350 for parts, plus 1.5 hours of labor, times an hourly rate of $90/hr. That comes to $485 plus sales tax (7%) for a grand total of $518.95.

Do it yourself and save!
