Default 2013 Equinox 2.4 water pump replace

I have a 2013 Chevy Equinox that started overheating, we replaced the thermostat but it continued to overheat, so we thought the water pump was the issue. After seeing the proximity of the water pump and the timing system, the decision was made to take the car to a garage nearby. The mechanic at first said that the water pump was circulating fine and that he was concerned the head gasket was cracked, but returned to is a few days later saying that the water pump is the problem and that it and the timing would need to be replaced also. He quoted us around a thousand dollars. This is frustrating because the timing was just replaced on the car two years ago and it cost $1700 to do so. So does this sound like a fair assessment price wise, and as a solution to this problem? Does the timing really need to be replaced to fix the water pump? Obviously I dont want to replace the timing again if its not completely necessary, so is it necessary?
