Default Can the car's internal fob sensor go bad?

I have a 2018 Chevy Equinox, which occasionally has had trouble responding to one of the two key fobs I have. I ordered a brand new fob, programmed it to the car, and it's working...except just today, my car still reported that no key fob was in the car - when it definitely was. It's been an intermittent recurring problem. If I press the unlock button on the fob, then the car seems to detect it.
Since this is a brand new fob, is it possible that the car's actual fob sensor could be going bad? Anyone heard of that happening before? Is that a warrantee-able / dealership issue?

There are multiple TSB's for fob issues depending on the DTC(s) reported. So yes it has happened before.
