Default equinox roof rack cross bar removal

The cross bars make noise when not in use. How can they be removed and reinstalled later. Thanks

I looked through the owners manual for the 2010 and 2009 models of the Equinox and found for the 2010 model the information that would be most helpful would be on pages 3-2/3-3. For the 2009 model year and older the information should be on pages 2-41 through 2-43. Both manuals suggest locking the forward crossbar as far forward as possible and the rearward crossbar as far back as possible. This is to reduce wind noise when not in use. I hope this helps you.

gnicolai, I apologize but I do not have that information in my resources. You could try speaking with the dealership about how to remove these crossbars. I hope that helps you.

The bar is attached to the end brackets with T25 screws on the underside. One of the ends is adjustable by loosening the screws. The bar can be removed after the adjusting screws and bracket are loose by lifting out of the rails. It took a couple minutes for both bars.

Eureka! I recently bought a 2012 Equinox, and it came with the crossbars.

I took them off with this no-tools method:

Slide the rear bar forward a few inches.

Behind where it was there are a pair of spring-loaded latches on the inside of the roof rail, at the front end of a short plastic panel.

Push the two latches backwards and pull them towards the center of the roof. They are part of a 6-inch or so long plastic panel that you can now pivot towards the car's centerline. Once it's pivoted slightly, you can pull it towards the front of the car and two tabs holding the back end in place will be free and you can remove the whole piece.

Do the same on the other side.

Slide the crossbars back all the way one at a time, and you can angle each bar so either end of the bar can be rotated out through where the plastic panel used to be.

Do that for both bars, then snap the plastic panels back in -- first put in the rear hooks, then push in the snaps at the front end.

Done!
