Question A/C not working, any ideas?

Hi

I am having trouble with my Air Conditioning on my 1998 Chevy Express Passenger 2500 Van.

so far I have checked the fuse near the driver's foot well and also notice that the compressor does not seem to engage when I switch the blower to AC

Do any of you have any suggestions of extra troubleshooting before I get taking things apart?

Many Thanx

Thanx for your answer, but shouldn't I hear the compressor click on when I switch to AC? Even if the system is empty?

It will not come on if the pressure is too low.

My 98 Express a/c compressor clicks in when switched on but I'm not getting ice cold air (just regular cold like when a/c is not selected).
Am I correct in thinking I need a top up as I probably have enough refrigerant pressure to activate the compressor but not enough to generate the cold ?
The a/c metal hoses are not cold and do not generate any moisture/condensation on them.
Thanks.

(when I bought the van , the a/c did not work at all. I had the refrigerant replaced and everything started to work , compressor etc).
Saabman, just have the refrigerant replaced. Hopefully none of the seals have perished due to lack of use !

Hi

Well I had the system refilled and discovered the caps where missing on the upper and lower connections... this (so I was told by the expert) might have been the reason for my loss of gas... He used a tracer to check for leaks and all seems to be OK now...

Lucky as I have just driven 1500 miles round trip in one of the hottest summers for a while here in Europe...

Thanx for all you replies
