I've got a 2000 Express 2500 5.0 that has about 70 psi on the compression test on the #4 cylinder. The others read about 150, which I figure is pretty good for 149,000 miles. I put some oil in the cylinder, did it again and it didn't rise. So I figure we've got some valve issues. Which makes sense, because when I opened up the upper intake manifold to change the spider valve last week, the EGR valve elbow points directly to the #4 port. Hoping it's all just carbon in the valves.

Anyway, question is: Can I pull that head without pulling the motor? Has anyone done it? Any tips?

 

Nevermind. Just did it. Took time but wasn't too bad.

Burnt valve. I think I had a lean condition due to a clogged SFI injector. Went with the MFI, had the head machined. Reinstalled and it ran like a champ.
