Twscarp, 1500 van is probably the reason why you see the trans temp. I only ever owned 2500/3500 models.

I have the 4L60-E and I get ATF temp, current gear, Input/output speed and slip speed, shift times (and probably more). This tranny has been around a while, and is widely used and documented.
The 4L80 is the heavier duty cousin, but from what I'm reading, there are many differences

The 4L60/80's are a GM design going way back, but the 6L90 is a much more modern transmission. It's based on a German design and the operation is very different. It was introduced in 2005, so you'd think that it would be more computerized. It's possible that there is plenty of sensor data is available, but the PIDs will be different.
Did you go into the Torque settings and enable the GM enhanced parameters? There are two gauges available for ATF temp so you may have to try both. I doubt that your dongle is the issue. Because transmission stuff is not standardized in OBD, and proprietary, information could be hard to find. It's access to this information that you're paying for when you buy the $200+ tools.

The Wiring harness and the transmission control unit is completely different and they are not compatible with each other. There are also differences when it comes to the sensors, mainly that the 4L80e do have 2-speed sensors that are different than the sensor on the 4l60e. If you want to swap to one of these transmissions remember to also purchase the control unit and the harness."
