if you drive it every day, it shouldn't be an issue. If you're going to let the van sit for a while then yeah pull it out.

I haven't mounted it yet and I am currently using my old galaxy s5 active phone, so i dont think old devices matter too much. Just dont use your spare flip phone, it probably wont work. however some dood with a red van here mounted a android tablet in his dash where the radio sits. Looks sweet but not for me. Im getting an old android tablet and I'll mount it to where it hangs from the rear vent settings on the roof with it being easily removable so some jack wagon doesn't break in for the 10 dollar tablet. I locked myself out the day after I bought the van, it only took 20 seconds to break in through the driver door with a wire. It's 2020 gm. That's the best you could engineer? Sheesh.

I was originally thinking I was going to want hardwired and mounted gauges, but having all these extra gauges more than makes up for it. I did have to use the gm special pids in the settings to get it to work but it was all in the settings.

I ordered the Eonon.com new Android 10 touchscreen radio model GA9480A and it came free with the Bluetooth ELM327 OBD-II Diagnostic Scan Tool Eonon part numnber V0056. It then gives you the gauges on the radio via the Torque app.

I'm using the Scangauge II for trans temps and a few others. Their initial setup codes for trans temp did not work on our 2014 4500. They sent me a couple of data loggers and with that, they were able to give me new setup codes that seem to work just fine.

You can get RPM in the factory cluster read out. Trans temp another story. Shame on GM.

It's hardly essential. most people will never need it. I have yet to see a vehicle with a factory ATF temp gauge.

Pretty common on trucks. As far back as the 2001 Silverado HD which is the first vehicle I remember having a stock trans temp gauge in the cluster. Most trucks even 1/2 tons in the last 10 years or more have trans temp available in the information center if they don't have a dedicated gauge and is probably the most important piece of information after vehicle speed when towing heavy loads.

On another note, I found a GM tech bulletin showing the dealer how to reflash the BCM on any Express Van with the L96 engine to have fast idle (activated with the cruise switch). This got me thinking to ask the dealer if there is an alternate software flash they could load on my van that would display (when selected) trans temp on the info read out in the factory cluster. Maybe the Express 4500 used in commercial applications has it in its profile? Ill report back what I find.
