Default How do my Seat belts work?

Hi,
I have a 1998 Chevy express passenger van. I can't figure out how the seat belts lock to stop people being thrown onto the dash or seat in front?

I have tried tugging hard on them with a jerk but they do not lock... Is there a trick or are they defective?

I also read that for child restraint I should haul out the belt to it's maximum before fitting a child seat...

Thanx for any advice you can give

they have an inertia switch inside of them. When the van stops fast, the seat belt should lock.
They should also lock when you pull the belt out to its max as you have read. this is usefull when installing a child seat because you want it locked down all the time, not just when you get into an accident

shawnvw Thank you for your answer... Is there a way to test this? Like brake really hard should the belts lock?

sorry for the late reply, I must have missed your message
yes, stopping hard and fast should cause the seat belts to lock up and prevent the pasenger from going through the windshield
