First off, this is my first post to the forum and want to say hello and thanks for any help provided. Look forward to discussions in the future.

A few questions, I have a 2008 chevy Silverado 1500 with the 5.3.

What is the name of the long small diameter cylinder that the check oil dip stick runs into?

2nd question, Whatever this item is called, has broke off my truck, so there is no way to check the oil level in my truck. It is also causing the truck to leak oil, therefore i cannot drive it. I dont know the name to get another one from the parts store. D'uh, i know, but cannot for the life of me think of what its called.

Once i get this part, how do you replace it. Is this something a general DIYer can do, or should I take it to the shop? Thanks!

 

Engine oil dip stick tube.

 

Oil Dip Stick Tube. If you can grab a hold of the old one with pliers and wiggle it out it could be a DIY. Worst case the oil pan must be removed so the tube can be tapped out from the bottom.

 

Hang on, you may not have to replace it ! !

IF it's just leaking where the Tube is inserted into the Block and not cracked or broken at another place...

1) You can try "lightly" tapping it down to re-seat the Swell against the block.
or
2) You can slide a small O-Ring over the tube, and down over the Swell.
or
3) You can spray/clean the intersection with Electronic Parts Cleaner (really get it clean and dry) and troll some JB Weld around the Swell.

PS: The JBW is not that hard to remove, IF the Tube eventually has to be replaced.
