700R4 won't go into any gear
Hope I'm in the right forum for this, the trans is in a 1991 Corvette, but I don't think it's an issue that's only a Corvette issue, so here goes:
When I bot this car, it only moved in 2nd gear (when in drive) and reverse (but downshifted to 1st sometimes). I changed the fluid and filter, and nothing changed. I got it to shift a few times playing with the TV, but it wasn't consistent or long lasting, but shifted through all gears well. So I raised the front of the car about 9", got under it, and pulled the governor and found a "dished" out spot on one side of the gear, like the governor had stopped moving and got stripped out by the output shaft. So I put a new gear in and put it back together. I lost probably 1-2 quarts of fluid out the governor hole, I'm guessing. I lowered the car back down and started it (in park) to check the fluid and fill it. After about 30 seconds, I heard some loud "clicking sounds, and the engine started to "labor", so I shut it off quick. I checked the trans dip stick and the fluid was about 3" high on the stick. I started the engine again and the fluid level didn't change and the car wouldn't go into any gear, but the engine slowed down about 100rpm when I put it in gear and there was a steady clicking sound from the front of the trans, like a hyd lifter click. I am guessing it is stock original, but who knows. The car has 130,000 miles on it. The fluid I took out wasn't burned, and was light pink, with no chunks of anything. One shop I spoke with told me if the trans oil is low it won't go into gear, but that shouldn't do what I am describing just sitting in park. I checked my FSM, and didn't get much out of it.
I haven't dropped the pan again yet, but am wondering if anyone who knows anything about these transmissions has any idea what might have happened to this one? Thanks
