Default ATF as a Cleaning Agent???

We were sitting around at work the other day talking trucks and the topic of engine cleaning came up (internally in this case). One idea was during an oil change once you drain the old put ATF in the engine and run it for 10-15 min to allow the detergents to clean the internal parts. Said it was done on all the farm machinery they had growing up. He also said he has a few diesel mech friends who do it prior.

This is the first I have heard of it. Any thought or opinions on this as a practice. I have a 97 K1500 with the 305. 175k miles.

I've heard a different version, like putting maybe a quart or so in but not filling it with ATF. Kind of an old folks tale in my opinion as picky and tight clearance as some stuff is these days I haven't had the courage to test it
