Can you program an engine not to start or run?
Im not sure why someone would want to put that much trouble into debugging code for shutting down the starting system. If you are looking for a quick and fast starter kill just pull the fuel pump fuse... A thief is not going to take the time to troubleshoot a non-start issue while stealing a vehicle... If you think you are going to stop them from just towing it away and using the vehicle later that is flawed thinking as the most likely outcome for vehicle stolen by towing it away is to part it out.. and any programming is out the door when the ECM or BCM is removed....at best you would have an immobilized computer module that that could be replaced as easily as the missing fuse....
Next, it would be better than Onstar which the Police claim is hard for them to get cooperation with and any thief worth his salt can cut three wires and not have to worry about. Not, to mention the possiblility of having the FBI listen in on you even if you haven't signed up. That's right Onstar is a bug in your car!
Lol! if you are worried about spying, the minute you got a cell phone, regular phone, credit card, internet service you give away more info to the government then what OnStart will ever deliver...
basilkies is not my real name and I don't pass out info on the internet. I know the bank and every other company does but I can't control that. I also know that I can be tracked through my ISP and they can even get a history of what websites I visit. It is even concievable that the nefarious they can get into my computer and get the info. I take reasonable steps to protect myself.
That is why it would be cheaper to use a system to turn my truck off so it can't be stolen and lose 24000 dollars or even not have to pay and extra 300 to 500 dollars a year for theft insurance. I also had an issue with the seller that made me suspicious and would have been worth the protection. So all the assumptions and advice that is non specific to the topic is no more than garbage from people making assumptions and mostly aren't that well thought out. But that's the chance you take in forums.

Hi basilkies,
Welcome to the Chevy Forums.
I'm not real big with sharing personal info over the net, either.
That said, OKAY, let's take a good look at what most people wind up doing with a programmer.
They screw around with engine torque and transmission shift specs, and
when things go out of whack they find they should have left it alone in the first place.
If they're lucky they can reset the TM to the original program. Otherwise they're
stuck with a voided warranty, a truck that runs like $#!+, and either a tow job
or trip to some sanctimonious dealer who's going to open a fresh can of their money.
I have to agree that you're treading on thin ice here, and low tech may be the
simpler, less costly, more effective alternative.
Do a thread search on TM for some real programmer nightmares...

There is also the issue of proprietary of the software (jail breaking) though I am a beliver in you buy it it's yours to do as you please.
The blanket statement that Onstar is for spying or is somehow conceived to be a spying tool is silly, I am sure it could miss used but then so can every item I listed above. I have and have used onstar and do not feel threatened by it.

Yeah, I agree, all this "spying" hardware is a little silly, IMO.
Let's push the cart downhill here. 300 million+ people in the USA.
IF an agent for the system can watch (spy on) 20 people effectively,
you would need 15 MILLION agents. Then you'd need another 1 million agents
to spy on the agents, and so on.
The more "spy" gadgets they put in our hands to "monitor" us, the more
unweildy the system becomes. I surely hope somebody's watching me, I LOVE
wasting their time...

Some mobile based controlling system has been invented.A program is installed in java enabled mobile phone which is coupled with controlling device with signal converter.

Does someone make a programmer that will do something to make a car or truck not start or run? I'm thinking security device here. I know OnStar can stop a car remotely by telling the computer to set the auto pilot to zero mph. I'm thinking something in this order would make it hard to steal a rig.
The reason I ask is I bought a truck from a kid and he seems a little flakey to me. Who knows how many keys he had? I also know OnStar is simple to defeat by cutting three cables. While a programer that sets your truck to not run could be duplicated I'm betting it would be pretty tough to do and so out of the main stream that it would be closer to impossible to figure out.

DIESTEC has the right idea. A simple fuel pump (or any simular) cut out switch mounted in the spot of your choice. Been doing that for years. Have a good tech help you with which wire to splice into if need be. Cheaper than a programer and you don't have to redo it because someone close by turned on their cell phone or you needed a new battery. Remember - K.I.S.S.
