Default catalytic converter

I'v got a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3ltr. I have had issues with my catalytic converter in the past and I'm sure its the cause of the loss of power problem I'm having now, along with the 220xxx long miles. I know i have 2 sensors on each bank, one before and one after each cat. Now I don't have to worry about passing IM tests anymore cause we no longer do it here where i live. I was thinking about either shoving a pipe through each cat and make it open like a normal pipe or just removing them all together. Now if I do that would my o2 sensors set off a check engine light? would the sensors tell the computer its running too rich or too lean? if someone could help me out that would be great.

The post-cat O2 sensors are there only to monitor the cat's efficiency. The pre-cat sensors are the ones that adjust the air/fuel mix. Removing the cats will trip the check engine light, only because the system will think the cat's aren't working right, which technically they wouldn't be. The only drawback is, with the engine light always on, you won't know if or when something else may trip an error code unless you do spot checks with a code reader. There are tricks, such as installing a spacer to the post-cat O2 sensors to take them out of the exhaust stream. Or, install O2 sensor simulators in their place.

Default o2 sensors and back pressure

All that bull about back pressure in a v8 is just that (BULL) ive had cats melt shut on my H2 hummer and pickup, dealer and exhaust shop said o2's are bad cats are fine. Once I chaged sensors and completely broke down on the interstate I cut cats off gutted them out and put tnem back on my hummer, had three times the power as before and I went from 7-8 mpg hwy to 14-14.5 hwy. My first upgrade with any vehicle since then is to remove or replace cat with high flow cat which can be very high dollar. I have only had extremely noticable positive results with opening up the exhaust! ur check engine light stays on which if cats are bad it will be on anyway just take them out of the exhaust pipe and let them hang and plug ports with bolt or pipe plug. I welded mine shut! Your light will go off. The air from driving will trick the sensor. Or just buy a programmer and turn off engine light plus have more power. Its a win win.
