Chevy pickup OBD I to non OBD I
I do not believe your 89 transmission was electronically controlled. If you want to upgrade the transmission you may want to see what is available at Summit Racing, might find a direct swap. As far as the engine goes, you could install an older engine/crate engine of your choice. You can bypass the computer if you are going with a mechanical/vacuum controlled distributor and a carb. If the check engine light still came on that would indicate there is still power going to the original computer, creating a drain that you would want to stop. You can then install any mechanical gauges you want, many are available. Have fun.
Thank you for the info SBchevyfan,
From what I've been reading the electronic controlled transmission started in some of the 93's.
I'll just have to get underneath and be sure. I don't think it is though. At least on mine.
Started ordering parts and talked with a guy I know who has been in the game for 20+ years. Building the motor is simple enough for carb, all up to you. He recommended a 700R4 trans since it's not electronic and has overdrive. Motor and trans is out of the way. HEI Distributor, now you have spark w/o computer.
Fuel pump I ordered:
https://www.holley.com/products/fuel...parts/12-801-1
Wiring harness:
https://www.holley.com/products/fuel...s/parts/12-753
They do suggest a shutoff solenoid that connects in the wiring for the pump, so it can shut off power to the pump in case your oil pressure drops. I opted out.
That's all I have for now, but the more I find, the more I can post. Hope this helped!

Those look like they should do the trick. I save the information. I won't be starting on this project until sometime in the summer. I don't have an enclosed garage, just a roof, and we are at 32 degrees for a high with snow here
today. Trying to get information before starting and figure out my plan of attack.
Thanks again.
