Default Distributor Gear BBC Roller Cam

I'm having a '73 454 built for a street 70 Chevelle, running first roller cam so purchased an AC Delco Distributor Gear P/N 19052845 . Builder tells me Distributor Gear Pin Hole is not the same size on both sides of shaft, one side has a step and one doesn't but builder nor I know why. Builder believes machining of the Gear Pin Hole is needed to accommodate Pin. Has anyone run into this? Also concerned maybe there is a reason for the step on one side of shaft...? Many thanks,
