Default exhaust upgrade

Iwould like to upgrade the exhaust on my 06 malibu. Here ismy question, the exhaust comes off the motor through the cats, then into a tube thing under the passanger compartment, then into the muffler. What is the tube thing under the passanger compartment. I heard it might be a noise ressenator, but haven't had a conformation on that. I would like to use a single inlet-dual outlet muffler, but i'm worried about the sound. Anyone have any experance with changing the exhaust on the v6 engines.I havea 3.5 liter. Thanks everyone.

Default RE: exhaust upgrade

All my exp with the resonators is that they are usally AFTER the muffler. Is the "tube thing" just a larger portion of exhust pipe or does it look like a small muffler, if it looks like a small muffler then its the resonator, otherwise its just a larger portion of exhust pipe for bringing the two sides of the exhust together after the cats prior to dumping into the muffler.
