Default FWD GM Rear Control Arm Bushing Replacement

some fwd gm's use a rear control arm that is permanently attached to the rear axle... can the rear bushings generally be replaced without dropping the entire rear axle all at once? ie.: can i loosen/lower one side of the axle assembly, remove/replace that side's bushing, then do the other side?
I have a fwd uplander and need to replace the rear control arm bushings. I have searched high and low for a video or procedure of it and am coming up empty for my model. the aftermarket service manuals i see recommend dropping the whole axle all at once... seems unnecessary... but do tell if you have horror stories or tips
i rented a press tool and have impacts. i figure i will need to jam a block of wood or something into the arm to keep it from collapsing while pressing... planning to get new hardware for it too. gotta call dealer for fastener specs...
thanks

i have done the trailing arm bushings just dropping one side at a time. pull it down and wedge a block against the arm and body to keep it down to access with a ball joint press. ended up using bearing drivers the right diameter to press them in. air hammered the old one out. keep in mind some bushings must be orientated correctly so look at the old ones first.

they do make specific tools to do t his but my way worked...but it was redneck backyardish.
