Need answer on stuck ignition key

What causes the key to get stuck in the ignition? I found the release button but was wondering if anyone knew approx what needs to be replaced and cost

Go low tech. Rub pencil "lead" on it. It's a combination of graphite and Baravian clay. And when the graphite isn't working, the clay is kickin'.
