Default 2003 Impala A/C blower switch only works on position 5

My 2003 Impala A/C speed switch only works on position 5. The motor does not run on positions 1 through 4. I've searched the forum posts on similar problems that say it might be the motor or resistor.

I checked fuses and relays but nothing helped. One odd thing I found was the blower motor runs on switch position 5 even with the fuses and relays removed!!

If it's the resistor where is it located?

Thanks for any help!

Default 2003 Impala A/C switch/blower fails on positions 1 thru 4

Super Moderator, Thanks for your reply! I removed the cover from under the dash to expose the bottom of the motor. . . but I don't see a resistor. Of course I don't know what the resistor looks like.

A diagram would be great.

Important: The blower motor resistor opening is slotted. Access is extremely limited.

Default Impala blower resistor

Thank you very much for the diagram! I appreciate your help very much. I took out one screw yesterday but didn't know what to do next. Will try again today. The location is indeed sadistically cruel.

Default Impala blower resistor

Good news - the problem is fixed. As you mentioned removing the seat I did the same. Even then it was still a horrible job. Anyway everything is working fine now thanks to your help.

A little background info: I'm 78 years old and my dearly beloved wife passed away a week before last Christmas. One of her last requests was that I get a decent car for her elderly brother who is driving a near-junk 1986 Chevy. Consequently I bought this nice 2003 Impala and spent the last week getting it ready to give to him. Repairing the resistor was the last thing that needed fixing and it's ready to give to her brother and fulfill her wish.

Thank you for your help!

Default Impala Heater/A'C Switch

Please accept my condolences in the loss of your little girl. Many years ago I lost a little girl only 7 years old. It's a devastating loss you will carry for the rest of your life.

Sincerely,
Fred aka tinytec
