Probably under no load the wiper motor trans probably still had enough left in it to turn all the way around. Hooking it up and having the wipers dragging on the windshield really increased the load and probably pushed it over the edge.

 

I think you're completely right about that Frank. It was a huge relief fixing it myself and the price was right!
