Default How To Clean, Rebuild, Restore & Bench Test Your Starter

Here is my latest video in my series of 1963 Impala restoration videos. In this video, I show how to clean, rebuild, restore and bench test a starter. I am restoring my original 1963 Delco Remy starter, but the steps are pretty much the same for any starter. I hope this helps you guys. Thanks for watching, and please like, share and subscribe on YouTube if you enjoy the videos!

Sounds good, but ONLY if you have the time to splendor on such a project.

Thank you! I agree that sometimes it would not be worth the time. But in this case, the whole project only took between two and three hours, and saved the purchase price of a new starter (about $150.00). In addition, saving an original part during the restoration should add some value as well.

I enjoyed rebuilding my 85 Nissan starter; easy to do and satisfying afterwards. And now I have a spare to rebuild in my free time to have as a back up. Cost me $25 for brushes set to do both starters. I will be curious to see if my rebuild lasts longer than the last one I bought.

In this disposable world there is something nice about rebuilding vs replacing. I must admit I only do it when I have no other option or the new parts are overpriced.

I get what you mean tech2, but after overhauling so many carburetors in the past, with a starter I'll just buy a rebuilt one, if needed.

yes, sometimes I want to finish the job asap.. for a $100 starter vs a $35 rebuild kit and add my time... I'll pay the Extra to be done with it.

when I get my 46 dodge; the process is enjoyable. fixing my modern throw away vehicle... fix it fast as possible.

Yeap! I don't use garages or shops much, as I can do my own work, but if something like my fuel pump ever goes out on my 15' Malibu, I need it fixed fast as it's my daily driver and I don't have a hoist to jack it up to drop the tank (plus all the gasoline in it). That and I am getting old and things like that are for younger folks.

Got a great independent shop that knocks off 10 percent on labor AND they'll take you home and pick you up if you don't have a ride. My Chevy K-1500 I'd do as its fairly easy to get to the gas tank, and drain the gas out, but still would be a chore. I can't believe the pump is 22 years old and still running strong. Of course, it was made in the USA too!

46 Dodge? No need to smog that at all. Nice!
