anyone know what this is? my car is failing the emissions test because of it

 

Yes, this is A.I.R. systems. Air Injection Reaction takes some of your exhaust from your system, and with a "smog pump" routes it through the combustion chamber in order to assist new combustion, and help reduce emissions.

First, check and be sure that your fan belt to your smog pump isn't broke.

Second, check to be sure the smog pump didn't seize up, and the pulley is still rotating.

 

It has a electric pump. The relay is a common failure. Also common is for water to get into the pump. Some models have an updated hose assembly.
