I tend to agree with kevinkpk on this matter. This vacuum nipple must be there for something. I'll have to see if I can find a vacuum diagram for this car if possible. There is a solution, it just needs to be found.

Thanks everyone, the original place I brought it to couldn’t find the reason for the rough idle. I’ll look into bringing it somewhere that is more familiar with vacuum line work.

do malibus have a vacuum reservoir? If they do then all he has to do is find it and see if it's connected.

That might be it MMJ. Pretty sure keinkpk is correct. It's got something to do with the EVAP system.. I've looked and looked but I cant find a good hose routing diagram.

I ran into the same problems finding routing diagrams or any info on this port. I ran it capped this morning and it seemed to run perfectly. The fuel trims were all within range pretty much the whole time. Occasional quick spike in the -11/-12 range. I did get a P0140 error but have gotten other O2 errors in the past so not sure if it is related. Still planning on bringing it in hopefully tomorrow to see if they can find and replace the line. Here is a photo of a 2001 Malibu with that port, it looks like it is capped in the photo. Another thread about an impala had a similar port on the front right side that others stated is capped. Anyone have a 2003 Malibu 3100 they can pop the hood on and clarify?

it is this port, right in front of the alternator. Can’t find any broken lines anywhere. Car runs fine when plugged. Car idles poorly and chugs with lean condition when open.

Default All you need is a cap

On my 2000 & 2001 Malibus that port doesn't connect to anything, so go by an auto parts store and buy some vacuum port caps and install one on that port. Yes, parts of the HVAC control runs on vacuum, but there is no vacuum reservoir in the car. BTW, the only vacuum connections used go to the brake booster, fuel pressure​​​ regulator, PCV valve, MAP sensor, and EVAP purge solenoid - those are all on the other end of the engine.
