Default 99 Malibu Fuel Filter

Trying to change the fuel filter on my 99 Malibu. I went to my local parts store and bought the filter and the special fuel line disconnect tool, but was unable to fit the tool between the filter body and the fuel line to disconnect the filter from the special fitting on the fuel line. Below isa link for the type of tool I tried. Can't remember if that is the same diameter as the tool that I tried, but I know that the tool I used was the proper diameter. The problem was that the collars on the disconnect tool were too long to fit between the filter body and the fuel line fitting. The parts store didn't have any other tools thatI could try. Does anybody have any suggestions so that I can avoid having to pay a mechanic $30 or more to do this simple repair? Thanks.

If you are 100% sure that the disconnect tool you bought will fit....relieve fuel pressure, use a hack saw to cut the filter end off as close to the filter as possible. Slide the dosconnect tool in, and with a pair of pliers, pull the line out. Have had to do this many times with this style of filter.
