Ignition key problems

Ignition key problems
I found the following effective for my 2002 Malibu Basic if the key won't turn to the Start position. This problem manifested itself for many months.
I knew there was nothing wrong with the ignition cylinder. I read on the Internet that aside from the cylinder the problem might be the cable from the shifter to the transmission is stretched, so to allow the lever to go forward as far as possible I notched the front floor console as shown in the picture.
The key turns to the Start position every time now. I don't know why it solved the problem, because the lever does not go into the notch. All I know is that this remedy worked for me.
