Exclamation 1998 Monte Carlo z34 problems

Hey

I have a 98 Monte Carlo z34 with a 3.1L engine and I am having problems. When I come to a complete stop and its in the second gear (I can't get it in first gear), when start to go it revs up and then the transmission slams the gear in. Now I am about to put a new torque converter and a new filter in. I need to know if that is what the problem is or is it something else that has to do with this car. If anyone can help it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Put a new trans in it. Even IF the TC did fail pieces of it are now through out the trans.

Its not that the TC failed it just won't shift right once I had it in gear and I was up to speed it was just fine. Its only when I have to shift back down to 2nd.
