OK daughter has driven car for a week now with no issues, so am assumming the fuel pump did the trick Thanks to all who contributed to this repair!

I have a 96 Lumina 3.1L & had to replace the fuel pump , too .

I may be wrong , but I suspect a lot of these kinds of fuel problems , in older cars , is caused by the ethanol in the gas ?

I think I had the same problem looks like I will be replacing the fuel pump also
