Default 97 Monte transmission issues

My 97 Monte Carlo starts fine as usual, and seems to shift into gear but when I let off the brake to go the car doesn't move. It rocks back as if there was a boot or something on the wheels and then just sits there as if it were in park. It does the same thing in neutral so I can't even move it out of the way. I'm not sure what other information would be useful for this. I'd really like to be able to move it and hopefully avoid having to get it towed, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
