Engine getting gas & cranking, but won't turn over

Engine getting gas & cranking, but won't turn over
Hi. I have a 98 Lumina with a 3.1 engine. 
Tried turning it on the other day and when i turned the key the engine sounded like normal but would not turn over. Tried again and this time stepped on the gas at the same time and nothing. If i leave my foot on the gas pedal is sounds like it is running but as soon as i let off it goes out. Also, when the engine shuts down there is a small hissing noise coming from the back of the engine.
anyone? any ideas? I can make minor repairs, but need a starting point.
