I was looking for a truck to build into a mildly modified off road vehicle. I came across a 1968 chevy (1/2 ton, 4x4, automatic, long box) in decent body condition with minor mechanical repairs needed. The owner was asking $5000.00. While I was inspecting the truck I noticed by the VIN# that the truck used to be a (2wd, stepside, automatic). I also noticed that the frame was off a newer Chevy, (the frame was modified to accept a 1968 Chevy bumper). A newer engine, transfer case and transmission is in place. My problem is identifying what the frame came off of. Any help on how to identify this frame would be greatly appreciated.

 

Is this a dumb question? Or am I missing something?

 

The way that you describe it, it sounds like you have more questions than that to ask. If the VIN is in the window that would only identify the cab, the bed has been scavenged also if it's not a step side, so it's anybodies guess exactly how many trucks went into this build.
My suggestion is that if you intend to use it only off road that you look at all the previous work and judge it buy fit and function. Any way you look at it, it sounds like the only thing that's truly 68 is the cab and bumper.

If the truck is only for off road, then the only thing that matters is how well it's put together.

 

Well I have some good news and bad news. I haven't been able to touch my truck since I started this thread due to some life complications, but I was able to track down the original owner of this truck when it was built up. He claimed the chassis and box came from a 1972 Chevy. I was told about the possibility of a stamped vin on the frame but wasn't told where to find it so thanks for the link Gary. I will see if I can locate it.

 

Wow!!! I've finally been able to go through the truck! This truck is a complete throw together. Mods and repairs up the ying-yang. No problem though, like Mudmaniac said "if you intend to use it only off road that you look at all the previous work and judge it buy fit and function.") It seems pretty well put together so it will make a good truck to turn into a play toy.
It's a big mix and match, and I shouldn't have to change a whole lot. The drive train is solid and fairly tough, so a lift, gears and tires should do it.

350 V8 - rebuild
turbo 350 - rebuild
NP205 - rebuild
dana 44 front - keep
GM 12 bolt rear - keep
3:73 gears - change to 4:10
33x12.50x15 - 35x12.5x15 or 37x12.5x16

Suggestions or advice?

 

I would go with 4.56 gears if you go with 35's or larger, if it is only for off road maybe even 5.13

 

i have a 1972 chevy c 10 2x4 longbox and i am wanting to turn it into a 4x4,but not sure what i can use to make the mod as easy as posable. i have my eyes set on a 1978 4x4 to make the change but not sure if it will work. any info would be appreciated
