Default Kickdown Problems

My son has a 1998 S-10 4X4 extended cab with a 4.3 tied to a 4L60E. His transmission started going bad and had a friend of a friend that repair them. But in 6 months it ground everything up inside. They repaired it again but when he going up a hill it did not kick down. So you give it more gas and it kicks down to 2rd (I think) because it goes to 2200 RPM to 5000 RPM it comes up to speed real fast. So I’ve been a mechanic 35 years on the BNSF and did one 350 with a friend that has done them before. So I decided to do it myself. Got on line at youtub and at transmissionbench.com there is 7 videos how to disassemble the 4L60E. And how to assemble it. And all the things that can go wrong. These videos are “GREAT”. When I got to the 3-4 accumulator I notice it was in backwards, Spring at the bottom of the barrow and then the piston. It should be piston down first then the spring.
But we have the same problem when it goes up a hill it did not kick down. So you give it more gas and it kicks down to 2rd gear (I think) 2200 RPM to 5000 RPM. I am trying to find out what and how the computer tells the transmission to shift down. Or is there another problem I’m not seeing? Any help or ideas would be great. Thanks funnnyfarm
