1999 S10 - broken suspension
1999 Chevy S10 2wd 2.2L
I'm not an expert so I appreciate any advice with this:
- Recently bought the truck from someone who'd let it sit for 1+ years so I don't have all of the details, hopefully enough though.
- Apparently he developed a ball-joint problem and let it go too long. Here's the result:
(B) = ball joint ripped out of the upper control arm.
(C) = can't be unbolted.
(A) = I think this is part of the ball joint, and was flung on to the brake line.
Here's the gorey underside:
Here's a shot of a stabilizer section that got ripped out of its socket:
Questions:
- Do I have to replace the entire upper control arm, or can I grind the rivets off and just replace the ball joint?
- Any recommendation on the order of fixing each problem?
- Probably need to replace *all* of the ball joints?
- Any special tools required?
Thanks for any tips.

yes grind, air chisel or drill out existing rivets from the factory, replacements are bolted in. The stabilizer pins are quite common anyhow and you can replace just the one side also.

Easiest way for me to get the rivets out was to drill them out. Be careful that you don't drill off center. Probably best to use a 3/8 or 1/4 inch bit, drill mostly through the rivet and then chisel the rivet head off. You'll have to drill the A Arm out anyway to put the new ball joint in because it has 1/2" bolts to hold it in I believe.
