Default 4wd won't engage

I have a 1999 Chevy S10 Extended Cab and it won't go into 4HI or 4LO when I push the buttons. Even the button lights won't come on. Is this electronic and/or vacuum. Can someone please help me? Also is there any other common issues I need to be aware of? Thanks guys much appreciated

all the dash bttn is is a "switch"-there's no vacumn that I am aware of...no ind light may not necc mean the switch itself is bad and your issue may lie elsewhere or in add'n to.....me, i'd start simple- @ the fuse and relay box and methodically elec probe test every juncture leading to the dash bttns-basically workin' my way back, working logically, 1 step at a time...means absoluterly having a diagram off the Net or a shop manual and decent volt/ohmeter and continuity testors, some long lenths of wire for bypassing, and above ALL....lotsa patience, common sense and the desire/drive to learn on the fly....if unable to have ALL of those, I'd recc payin a mechanic that DOES have all this the small(reletively speaking) diagnostic fee...doesnt mean ya have to also have him repair-yer basically paying for the proper equip and know-how to find the underlying cause....wish'n ya the best of luck
