Default 98 S10 truck, intermittent guage problem

My father in law's 1998 Chevy S-10 truck will intermittently lose all guage indicationswhen driving. (speed, RPM, lights, oil, heat, etc.). The truck runs fine, and will not disengage the cruise control when this happens.
Any suggestions? I assume the ground wires need to be checked?

That would be a very good start. I would pull the dash off and make sure the gauge cluster not only is clean, but has a good connection and is tight.

Check the EGR Valve, my 97 Blazer had similar problem and what happens is carbon build up in the intake flakes off . It then will cause the EGR valve to stick open intermittently, which causes the engine to lose intake manifold pressure, (in other words shuts the engine off, until the carbon clears the valve). This is a common problem on vortec engine that have an EGR Valve. Later models do not have one, my 2002 S-10 ZR2 does not.

If that doesn't work then go to mrwhizard.com. This is a common problem with a lot of vehicles. They can fix it a lot cheaper than anybody else.

It sure sounds like your ignition switch. I,m pretty sure if you check the tsbs you will find one on the ignition switch.

I had two of the above problems on my 94

a) chasis ground bad - Although this caused not only the dash to light up and die but also the vehiclewould barely run, and even die at points, very difficult to re-start
b) EGR valve, only dash error was "check engine" truck ran poorly but still ran no other "electical" related to this issue
