1995 k1500 Cold Air Woes - has anybody with a Cold Air Intake done this?
So I have an Airaid CAI and I want to get more cold air to it.
There is no heat shield and it was just sucking the hot air from the
Engine bay in so I installed a snorkel duct into the end of the filter
and stuffed the other end of the duct into the stock path where outside
air is brought into the stock filter. HOWEVER the intake for that tunnel
in behind the right side front turn signal which I dont see how any air at
all could get into that stock snorkel being behind the turn signal...
so what should I do?
1-Buy a new hood with an elevated air scoop for a couple hundred bucks?
2-you see where that duct is coming out of the filter going behind the firewall?
should I cut a circular hole in the side panel on the outside
of the truck then install a scoop over the hole to let in cold air?
3-just leave it as is, I rarely drive the truck enough and would not get the benefits
enough to justify spending the time and money on it.

3.. I think that if you cut a hole in the side of you truck you will regret it later when your buddies clown you. I have had one of those CAI and I noticed more changes with my K&N. On some applications it might make more of a difference.

or, you could buy some moldable plastic and make a heat shield and form into a box to block the heat, very easy, all you need is a heat gun, a drill, some screws and epoxy

So far it seems as if the popular vote is for the new hood,
But nobody has voted yet in the poll above *rolleyes*
I do like the look of the hood with the big air intake scoop in the middle,
IMO it is tuff lookin and just looks cool in my book, plus it's a good way to get cold air in.
I am guessing a hood will run me about $300.
I can check out pick n pull to see if they have any used in good condition for cheap.
Ilso I thought of making a heat shield cuz I know how to fabricate, but sheet metal absorbs
Heat so I gave up that idea then I thought of plexy glass or something
But idk where to buy some squares from to make a box out of. Anybody else know?

the first problem is, did you cut out the end of your filter if you did you essentially have no filter. take it out and look through it, if you can see out the other side you just killed the effectiveness of your filter if not that is a cool looking piece of nothing, the snorkel that is. I will be installing a CIA in my Tuned Port conversion In the coming weeks, so look for the post, I plan on building a box for the filter in the place of what would have been 2nd battery box , then going down through the bottom of it for fresh air, and building a CIA scoop into the plastic below the bumper, beside the left tow hook. P.S. the air wont be in the box long enough to heat it very much

Hey, no I did not cut out any part of the filter.
Most auto part stores sell an adapter that just plugs into the tip of CAI filters.
It is made by Spectre but will fit any filter cuz IIRC all cone filter types have a standard tip.
So I just bought a hose for that and the little hose/filter adapter - no cutting necessary

with electronic engine management systems, CIA helps a little on power (not as impressive as advertised) , its main advantage is MPG, and wear on the internals. the ECM will adjust timing and AFR to the temp of the incoming air for optimum efficiency. the hotter the incoming air the leaner the fuel mixture (less power) and the more the timing is retarded to eliminate autoignition (again less power). but you will feel an increase, how much depends on your rig and you.
