Default Fuel pump install

I own a 2001 Silverado 6.0 liter and I think I have a faulty fuel pump.. I left my truck running to warm it and during that time it ran out of gas, ( I know, dumb me ) but the fuel gauge starting acting up a few weeks ago.. So I went and put gas in and it wouldn't start..I am assuming the the fuel pump went out? so my questions are.
1. Are the sending unit and the fuel pump one assembly?
2.Would it be easier to remove the bed or drop the tank to replace the fuel pump?

NO!!! Don't drop the tank that takes to long and is harder. just get a couple of people and lift the bed off it's only 4 bolts and disconnect the tag lights wire and BAM your at the top of the tank. you might need 4 people to get the bed off it's pretty heavy but way easier

oh yea and you can seperate the fuel pump from the sending unit
