Question Speedo fail after driving without the gauge cluster

I took the gauge cluster out of my 2001 Silverado to put on a new panel. I had to take the pointers off, and I have made sure they are correct when I put them back on. Everything is right, except the speedo doesn't work. I did have to drive it a few miles to work and back without the cluster in. It dinged the entire time the wheels were rolling. If I stopped, the dinging quit. Would this be a computer issue, as in unhooking the battery for a while, fix this, or did I burn something up. Anyone else out there do the same thing?
