Default 04 Silverado problems filling fuel

Our 2004 Silverado LS has been giving us problems when filling up with gas. Start pumping and it will go anywhere between 10 cents and 25 cents and click off. It will do this repeatedly anywhere from 5 to 20 times before it will finally start taking fuel normally and we can fill the tank. Anybody know what's going on and how to fix it? We replaced the fuel cap a couple years ago and have been getting a "Tighten fuel cap" warning on the dash since then. But the fuel cap fits. Thanks.

I'd chuck the gas cap. Fitting isn't an issue. Having the tighten fuel cap warning is.Might well be affecting the vapor system.

Either the fuel filler vent or tank vent are clogged.
