Default 1997 Cheyenne 4 X 4 Question

I just got a 97 Cheyenne 4x4 and I crawled underneath, and saw something I have not seen on my other trucks. I don't know if it is right, so I'm asking for assistance. May be a dumb ?, but I am just not sure what this is. I discovered what appears to me to be a missing cover over the bottom part of the tranny. The picture was taken looking back from the front underside. I see "gears" and what appears to be a missing cover plate. Is this supposed to be exposed or am I missing a cover. The truck runs and shifts fine. Just a little weird to me I guess. Thanks for your help or any explanations. (I'm not a mechanic by any means)

Thanks. Theres also like a 2 inch hole in the bottom that appears to need a plug. Should it be plugged too or left open. Thanks... PS- How does a flywheel cover just go missing????? Weird...
