Default 2001 2500hd check engine

hi my truck has been running nice and clean when I use it.It has about 31,000 miles. It has been sitting from time to time.the problem started when the battery was dead.fixed that and drove around normally for a while.then noticed i needed oil change, then the check engine light came on.I thought it had to do with needing oil change so I took it in for that.I needed a smog test so I took it there as well.the guy said I had check engine light and I told him when I got oil change they forgot to reset light.Well it didn't pass smog for engine light.the smog guy reset light and told me to drive for 25 miles.did that and took it back for retest.failed again and he told me drive it longer ,till i hit 50 miles.if light remains off bring it back for retest.if light comes on take to mechanic.right about the 50 mile mark the light came on again.what do you think I should do?what could be possible cause? Is it because factory 30,000 mile maintenece needs to be done?please help

scan for codes at your local autozone, then let us know what codes pop up

Autozone does it for free. I'm not sure about the programmer. My knowledge to programmers are limited to Cummins performance for the most part.
31,000miles on an 01 is awesome, i just crossed 19k on mine and I've had it just over a year.

The check engine light has Nothing to do with maintenance. It means that one of the emissions sensor is seeing a problem and the computer is compensating for it. You need to take to have it properly diagnosed. Codes do not tell you what is wrong only what is being affected.
