Default 2002 1500 Blower Motor Shot

The blower in this 1500 Silverado 1500 has been shot for a few months now...sucks having to choose between frostbitten fingers (windows down) and a beautiful mist-tinted window (windows up, breath humid) in the northeast lol.

This started last summer, when the blower would only run on setting "5." So the resistor was shot. Replaced it, and it ran all 5 settings nicely for a grand total of 2 days. Then it did nothing at all, didn't work on any settings. It's been that way for a few months. I'm assuming that there was too much voltage across the motor?

My questions are: Is there anything I should check that might be faulty before replacing the motor? And whatever I have to do, how can I prevent this from happening again?

Thanks guys. I appreciate any suggestions you guys can give.

EDIT: Oh yea, and I believe I recall smelling an electrical burning when the motor quit after the resistor was replaced. If that helps at all.

Well I was going to post a similar problem and see if anyone had issues like mine and what they did to fix it.

I pulled off my resistor and blower motor and found the resistor wiring harness was burnt up on the black wire and through into the connector. I took the blower motor and plugged it into my 2001 and it works fine but its not a true test because I only ran it for a minute or so. But I did notice a slight drag, if I hand spun both motors the 06 stopped faster than the 2001 so I might just replace it anyway to avoid another resistor failure. I took the heater control switch out and it didnt smell burnt at all but that might also get replaced.

I have a new resistor on order but need another harness connector that goes into the resistor, I will hit a few junk yards tomorrow and see if the dealer has something I can splice into the harness.

My question is why doesnt this problem blow a fuse before burning up the wire harness and possible causing a fire?

Edit: I went to alldata.com and found a TSB and used the number in a google search and found there maybe a character flaw in this connector that goes into the resistor so the bad smell you smelled maybe the wires burning up. It seems like you can buy these connectors probably at the dealership so I will find out Monday.

Hey thanks a lot for troubleshooting on here man, I appreciate it. I looked at that link you gave, and the service bulletin doesn't include 2002 silverados...still could be the same problem.

The blower motor should have the full load amps listed on it, check the amp draw to see if the motor is drawing more than the rated amps. If it is then it's bad.
