Default 2004 Silverado with no Fuel Filter?!

So i was just doing some regular maintenance and decided to change the fuel filter. So i order the part and get home. I purge the fuel system, hop under the truck and wtf?! no damn filter. It should be bolted to the right frame rail near the fuel tank, but nothing.

Any ideas? Do i have the non-changeable kind built into the sending unit?

For some reason along that time, GM favored and in-tank filter. Its the same with my mother's Envoy. Its a PITA to change...

pita-people ingesting tasty animals. and from my knowledge theres always a wee lil filter in the tank and then an inline one. some makers only rely on the in tank one. which is retarded because you should see what comes out of those things.

I have the same truck -04 Silverado-6.0-2500HD 4X4-learned the hard way, no, no gas filter. There's a sock in the gas tank, but I guess Chevy, in their infinite wisdom, decided this model didn't need an inline filter. Or nawthin'.

BTW, after a stem-to-stern search from the injection rails to the gas tank, I verified this information directly through my dealer...

I found the same problem on my 04 8.1 , no filter in the rail, just a bunch of evap stuff around the tank but no filter to be found anywhere, might be one in the tank is what i got told.

The one in the take most likely protects the pump from ingesting particles that would wear it out or just straight up damage it. Its probably a good idea from GM to lessen pump damage, Yea it is a PITA, but its better than changing the pump in my opinion.

I just bought the filter and got under there and there’s no filter . Came to the mighty internet like wtf is wrong with my truck and good to know I’m not alone. Now I’m going to go beat my head off the frame . Thanks.
