2013 6.0 vortec new guy
Hi all. i am new to the forums and i am new to chevy. I am a life long ford truck guy. My current truck is a 2006 ford f250 diesel. Man have i had problems, to the point that i will not buy another ford truck. Anyway, i have a few friends that have the duramax and love them but with the lack of driving that i do with my truck(67k on my 2006)i dont want another diesel. That puts mew to my only choice of the 6.0 vortec. I have a million questions but i will only bore you with a couple. I have a slde in camper that i haul, will the 6.0 be enough? Also, i am told that the mpg on this motor is terrible, does anyone have real life experience qith the 6.0? That setup i am looking at is 2013 3500 cc shortbed with the vortec.
Thanks in advance

Mpg won't be great that's for sure. When buyin one, look into the gearing they put in them. Some have a 3.73 gear some have a 4.10 gear ratio. Get the 4.10. It'll help while pullin. Around town you'll probably get 10-13 mpg. Not great but a gas 3500 won't get great mpg anyways. It'll pull the camper no problem, but it ain't no diesel
You sound EXACTLY like me. I had a 6.0 Ford that left me stranded every vacation that I took it on. I traded it in on a GMC 6.0 gas, 2013, long bed, 3500, crew cab. As mentioned above, get the 4.10 gears. I did. I tow a 28ft fifth wheel. Although it is not nearly as powerful as the diesel, it gets me where I am going EVERY TIME!
Although I would never buy a Ford again, I did check on trading my Ford into a Ford Dealer as a trade in. THEY DIDN'T WANT IT!
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. NEVER, EVER AGAIN!!!!
You will love the Chevrolet. No, gas mileage is not great. 11-12mpg. BUT, diesel now costs more than gas, so it all works out.
Good luck finding some shmuck to buy your 6.0. (Advertise it on Ford-Trucks.com, they still love the 6.0)
good luck

fishbreath, the last time i had my camper on the truck i blew the turbo. Truck had 65000 miles and of course i was beyond the warrenty in years. Another 1800 bucks. After replacing all the calipers 3 times corperate said it was my driving habits !!! thats what did it for me, they knew i had problems from the start and they blame me. I can only hope that the chevy will give me a better product for the money.
I bought a 2013 2500 yesterday. It doesnt have everything that i wanted for options but i feel i got a great deal. They gave me 16500 for my truck and came down 10k off the sticker. I pick it up today and cant wait to start my new journey with cheverolet. I can only hope that it will be better than the ford !!

The 6.0L "Powerstroke" is actually not a Ford engine. They sourced it from Navistar (International) and it was installed in the F-Series heavy duty trucks from late 2003 up through the 2007 models. The DT365 (Navistar's nomenclature) had a lot of problems and was NOTHING in comparison to the indestructible 7.3 (DT444e) engine that it replaced.
Head gaskets, head studs, radiator/cooling issues and electrical glitches plagued many of those trucks. In fact, you'll pay a lot more money for a 2002 Ford 7.3L diesel truck than you will for an '04 or '05 with the 6.0L under the hood.
Ford replaced the 6.0 with another International engine for the 2008 trucks, the 6.4L. It has twin turbos and more power than the 6.0L - but has still had some issues. In 2011, Ford finally dropped their long-standing deal with Navistar and began to build their pickup truck diesel "in house" -- known as the 6.7L 'Scorpion' Powerstroke.
GMC/Chevy have soldiered on for well over a decade now with the venerable Duramax turbodiesel. The Duramax is surprisingly quiet and can still pull its own weight - while offering superior fuel mileage versus the gasoline V8s.
Trucks from all of the "Big Three" have improved greatly in recent years; which is a good thing or consumers. The 2014 Silverado 1500 is a beautiful truck, so it will be neat to see what the HD versions look like when they appear on the market.

Last October a GMC delaer gave me 15K for my truck, even though I told them of the past issues. Said it was the "cleanest one they had seen". I had expected to get about 10-12K for it so I immediately took the deal. The dealer then sold it to a friend of his. It promptly blew up 30 miles later. I was told that the rods went through the block.
Although I was fortunate, I feel quite bad for the new owner. I also can't understand why anyone would buy a 6.0 Ford Diesel. (Probably brainwashing by the FTE website. They drink a LOT of Koolaid)
Good luck
