Is there any way to tell exactly what engine I have with the codes available on the engine before tearing the engine down. I have been looking all over the place and have a general idea of what I have but not exactly what it is.
I have an engine code of 14093638 which tells me its a 350 with either a 2 or 4 bolt main and could either be flat tappet or roller lifter engine. It has the engine casting# 5.7LG SGI and the serial # is VG013270. Its also in an 87 Chevy 4x4 truck.
I want to know if its a flat tappet of roller lifter engine so I can order parts before tear down. The engine runs like a champ but I want to re bearing it and re ring it before any problems. The engine has steel freeze plugs in it and I have had to replace two of them already so the engine is getting pulled so I can change out all of the freeze plugs.
While I am at it I want to freshen up the motor and am thinking about putting a CAM in it but I need to know exactly what I have before ordering parts. Also if it is Roller will a CAM effect the computer for the TBI with being a bigger CAM. Any and all help is much appreciated.
One more thing is What would be a good CAM for my truck that has the Edelbrock Performer TBI intake, Doug Thorly headers, Flowmasters, and 2 1/2 inch exhaust. I have been tossing around the idea of a Comp 280 but am not sure if I want the lower vacuum that comes with it or going with a Comp 272 and let it be a little loper and almost unnoticeable. Any advice is much appreciated.
