Default '91 1500 has gap in steering column and wont shift

i have an automatic '91 C1500 that, after being broken into, has a gap between the shift collar and the turn signal housing. it turns over but it won't shift out of park-the shift collar itself seems reluctant to turn right, like its hitting something. am i gonna have to pull the whole steering column apart? since i already took off my steering wheel to replace the lock cylinder how should i proceed? any advice is appreciated.

It takes some special tools, but you've got to get down to the level of that bowl.

What kind of special tools are we talking? Different than the steering wheel puller and the thing that releases the lockplate? I've already rented those from Autozone. If there are additional tools will they have what I need?

You're good to go.

First thing tho, roll under the truck and make sure that they didn't jump a curb and bend up the transmission linkage.
